Costco Plans Major Store Expansion Across North America

Costco is accelerating its expansion strategy, with the warehouse retail giant preparing to open more than a dozen new locations in the coming months across the United States and Canada.

The new warehouses will bring Costco’s popular Kirkland Signature products, food court offerings, discounted fuel, and bulk shopping model to additional communities as the company continues its aggressive growth plans.

Costco Targets More Than 30 New Warehouses Annually

Costco has already experienced significant growth this year, opening new locations in states including Arizona, California, Florida, Minnesota, New York, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin, along with international openings in Mexico and Taiwan.

CEO Ron Vachris said the company aims to open 30 or more warehouses annually over the next five to 10 years. Approximately half of those locations are expected to be in the United States, while the remaining openings will focus on international markets including Canada, Mexico, Asia, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Despite the expansion, Costco has not announced plans to enter new states such as Rhode Island, West Virginia, or Wyoming in the near future.

New Costco Warehouses Opening in October

Five Costco warehouses are scheduled to open in October across the United States:

  • Lee’s Summit, Missouri
  • The Colony, Texas
  • Amherst, New York
  • Lawrence, Kansas
  • Camarillo, California

The Lee’s Summit warehouse is scheduled to open on October 2, while the Amherst location is expected to open on October 28. The Camarillo location’s fuel station opened earlier this year, with the warehouse planned to open later in October.

Costco Expands Into Canada With New Locations

In November, Costco plans to open nine additional warehouses, including four new Canadian locations.

The Canadian warehouses will be located in:

  • Northeast Edmonton, Alberta
  • Lloydminster, Alberta
  • East Windsor, Ontario
  • Wasaga Beach, Ontario

Additional U.S. locations scheduled for November include:

  • South Meridian, Idaho
  • Vallejo, California
  • Chandler, Arizona
  • Newport News, Virginia
  • Franklin, Wisconsin

The Chandler, Arizona location will operate as a Costco Business Center, a format designed primarily for business customers while still allowing regular Costco members to shop there.

Existing Communities Also Seeing Costco Growth

Some new Costco developments are expansions or replacements of existing locations rather than entirely new market entries.

In Newport News, Virginia, Costco is replacing its longtime warehouse with a larger 163,000-square-foot facility and fuel station after purchasing a nearby 32-acre property.

Other communities currently working toward future Costco locations include Downey, California; Charleston County, South Carolina; Hillsborough County, Florida; Fresno, California; Lake St. Louis, Missouri; Southborough, Massachusetts; Silver Spring, Maryland; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Des Plaines, Illinois.

New Products Continue to Drive Costco Growth

Alongside its warehouse expansion, Costco has continued introducing new products and seasonal offerings to attract shoppers, including new coffee products, snacks, and other popular warehouse items.

The company’s combination of membership value, private-label products, affordable fuel, and expanding store footprint continues to strengthen its position as one of the largest warehouse retailers in North America.
